The Most Beautiful Times

On a sunny morning, we graduated from the University. Colorful flowers, teddy bears, ‘Good Luck’ water and mugs alongside with our most loved families. What a good memory! We are looking forward to a lovely future. How excited!

Girl with Metalling Earring

| 0

Metals are industrially recovered from solution by cementation where metals from solution are exchanged with zinc. Here we use cementation as a form of art. The painting illustrates the cementation of gold, silver, iron, tin, nickel, copper and cobalt out of Ionic Liquids. All the metals are grey due to their nano-structure. Fifty spots of coloured metal solutions were painted onto a piece of galvanised steel to demonstrate how this spontaneous redox chemistry results in the Girl with the Metallic Earring.

#IFeelBetterWhen I go someplace new. Taken on Swiss independence day at Lake Geneva. It’s just a very pretty lake. (2018)

CACTUS

| 0

#IFeelBetterWhen I look after my plants. Aren’t cacti just wonderful? I always dress mine up. He’s ready for the cold and rainy weather in this photo. I wasn’t living with other students when I did my undergraduate degree so at times things felt a little isolating. But because I had my cactus, things were okay. Somehow looking after something helped me to look after myself.

OUR WORLD

| 0

#IFeelBetterWhen I dream of other worlds. Dreaming of new places isn’t always a form of escapism, it can also be a very useful thing that actively helps you in your day to day life. Sometimes it’s nice to just reside in whatever obscurities and shards of reality that your mind produces. It’s healthy to allow yourself some creativity. JOURNEY

| 0

#IFeelBetterWhen I allow myself time to develop a skill. This was the first piece I created when I started A-level art. The theme I chose was ‘Birds of a feather, flock together’. I didn’t have much confidence when I was doing GCSE Art. I always felt like I was lacking and had no individual style. But with this drawing, I tried working in mixed media for the first time and the results were better than usual so I gained more confidence from it and steadily began to improve my work. It’s not a perfect drawing but it’s a starting point and it reminds me that small personal achievements are the first step towards change. Media: Watercolours Salt India ink Colouring pencils

I feel better when I’m with her

| 0

The image is a charcoal self-portrait, drawn from memory rather than from a reflection or a photo. The words around the portrait are inspired by a collection of words that I created based on a separate piece based around the theme of ‘I feel better when’. I listed words of all the things that made me feel better or happy. I then chose one word from that collection to create the written piece around my self portrait. The words talk about my dog and how I feel better when I’m with her. But I do think that the words could relate to the image of the female face or be interpreted in other ways by the viewer.

By moonlight is an artwork that appreciates nature, the moment of contemplation and calm. #IFeelBetterWhen I am in nature, the sky is clear and I can sit and contemplate.

I feel better when I am sewing. The repetitive motion of the needle through fabric and the tactile nature of the finished product is soothing, and prevents anxiety-induced destructive behaviours. In my experience, mindfulness is more easily achieved through concentration on physical processes like this, and the finished work is a good reminder to be aware of the present moment.

Unexpected owl

| 0

Bright ‘Brusho’ colours swirling and crossing over each other. The joy of experimentation and of pure colour. The satisfaction of a painting turning out well 🙂 The wonder of discovering that this way up an owl is looking out at me. I feel better!

My first flowers

| 0

This was my first attempt at painting with watercolour. I was delighted at how it turned out, despite my lack of technique. My impressionistic vase of leaves and flowers makes me happy with its colour and the memory of a new beginning. I cannot draw, but I can play with paint – and that always makes me feel better!

New moon

| 0

Here at the end of the day the shadows have encroached on the land, but over the estuary the sky has turned a clear dark blue contrasting perfectly with the orange of sunset and it’s reflection in the water. Though there is an ending there is also promise in the sky as the new moon rises. This is a moment to cherish.

Luminous pond

This scene is bathed in sunlight. It shines off the water and waterlilies, lights up the contrasting red flowers and touches the surrounding trees dressed in all the shades of spring green. One moment in time becomes a shimmering jewel to treasure and bring joy to the soul

I feel better when I travel on my bike. I carry the essential, and that’s all I need. I explore new places, meet new people. And I don’t need anything other than my legs. I feel better when I feel free.

Parallel

It’s not always easy getting on my bike in the morning, and certainly not after a long day at work, but 10 minutes in I know I’ll feel better. The potential to see wonderful, beautiful and occasionally really surprising things is much greater when you’re in the environment, not looking at it from behind glass. This is alongside the A50 dual carriageway near the M1 roundabout.

Once a year I work as a dogsitter in a tiny Austrian village, out of season. There’s nothing to do but climb mountains, and nothing gives you perspective like a mountain.
