The 93rd Road

When things get really tough, and I feel like I’m overwhelmed by things, since I’ve spent a lot of time travelling the UK, a very safe place for me is in the car. Driving down country roads, and exploring new places surrounded by beautiful scenery, or just a pointless drive for however long. The feeling of driving has always been quite freeing for me – it’s a time to shut your mind off, turn the music on and sing my heart out to whatever genre takes my fancy in the moment. I’ve explored so many different roads, and being able to see just how big the UK is, and also the world, being able to just get in my car and get some headspace, it really helps me to see the bigger picture. It helps to get my thoughts together, to breathe and to remind myself that I’m safe, I’m worthy, and that the feelings that I’m feeling in that moment are valid. Life is a bit messy. It can be unforgiving, complicated and ugly…but reminding yourself of your worth, finding things that make you feel safe, and being able to disconnect from the stresses that you face, life truly is about balance. It’s all about learning. Adapting. Being gentle.

Gracious solitude

Growing up, the idea that a woman could go off travelling on her own seemed to be just that – an idea; something that I felt didn’t really happen very often, and I had never really spoken about it to anyone. It wasn’t until I got to my early 20s, fresh out of university, that I really started to think about finding the courage to go exploring on my own, and the big dream was to get myself to the Scottish Highlands which were 620 miles away from home. Almost a year after graduating, I went on a biking trip to the Yorkshire Dales with a friend of mine. Before this, the trips I had been on were either with previous partners or my family. A few months later, I was on my way to south Snowdonia in Wales, where I spent a very long weekend and was met with changeable weather, failing waterproofs and a taste of freedom of being on my own in a new place. Granted, by the time I was settled, I was feeling on top of the world, but before I had even got there, the fear of potentially putting my safety at risk was something that I almost constantly thought about. Wales wasn’t too far from home, so if was desperate, I could go back, but Scotland was a lot further. When I returned, I booked a Scotland trip for the following February, splitting 10 days between Inverness and Fort William. The closer it got, the more I questioned my choice, worrying about the prospect of travelling so many miles on my own, as well as potentially breaking down for the first time, hurting myself halfway up a mountain in the middle of nowhere with no signal, or running out of food and water when I was out on a long hike. Regardless of my concerns, I went anyway. I always knew that the Scottish Highlands would be a fantastic place to go on holiday, but I never imagined how deeply I ended up loving every second of that trip. Pain au raisin was my main breakfast choice, and I was usually out of the B&B by 7am, exploring and walking to my heart’s content. I had never felt so comfortable, liberated and relaxed as I did whilst I was amongst those mountains. There was a welcoming stillness. A feeling of belonging. I was blissfully unaware of my world back home. Since my first solo trip away, I have now been on 11 holidays on my own, exploring many different parts of the UK. Explore. Share. Inspire. Live. This piece is mixed media – partially photograph, partially digital art, both of which I enjoy thoroughly.

Learn to be patient with yourself

| 0

How many times you’ll be able to behave with others but not with your self? Toooo many times..! Yourself is the first person you should care about, you are not selfish on doing that, it is called self-care… that inspiring me on making this artwork that is also a good reminder..! My favourite way of doing art is by using recycled materials. Canvas is an old white board while colour are my old nail polish.

Afternoon Stroll

My friends inspire me to be the best person I can be. This image was taken on an afternoon stroll with a friend that pushes me to improve every day despite the challenges I face.

Sound Inspired

I sat with my sketchbook and hit play. As I was listening I felt inspired to close my eyes and had a smile on my face as images started to appear. I started making marks of that smile and what I could see with my eyes closed and it evolved from there.. The bees are all people who have inspired me in some way – the majority of which are now bees because they have passed on – but that doesn’t stop me talking to them. I have a wild bee garden and the lavender is part of that. In the summer I often go and sit with the humming of the bees to find peace, stillness and am then able to just be. This then expands my creativity tenfold. I also thought of the gifts these people had given me. Mostly it was love – the most powerful of all. Included also is art training, courage, laughter, and the pan of eggs actually represents giving. I had no idea this was what would come out – and I think I may have misunderstood the exercise.. ha ha but here is my entry. I now have your song on a loop in my head – of which makes me smile – Thank you!

One reality, different perceptions

Panels show images of my dog’s rainbow snuffle mat as he and I see it. We both love it, and one another, despite seeing the image in totally different ways. We are united, rather than divided, by our different perceptions of the rainbow spectrum ?
