The power of friendship

| 0
Spirit animals and spiritual symbolism is totally my thing and for this mixed media piece – the various roses symbolise: love, passion, joy, purity, admiration, joy, grace and gratitude whilst the elephant embodies: good luck, power, success, wisdom, kindness, experience, loyalty, companionship and unity.  All of which was very significant at the time it was created, to inspire a treasured friend in need..

In full bloom

When you wake up early to the sun shining in a clear blue sky, birds singing and the little Apple tree outside the front door is in full blossom.
It’s a moment of pure joy and gratitude…

Food for thought

I’m inspired by the thought that there is still so much left to discover about life and the universe we live in. I’ve represented this in the form of sweets!

Listening

| 0

Recently my son was in hospital. He has profound hearing loss and the operation was for Cochlear Implants. The surgery went well but his recovery was tough and we had an extended stay in hospital. Putting my headphones on and listening to music helped get me through some tough times. Music is always there for us, to comfort, to inspire, to help release emotions! It’s interesting to think about this in terms of my sons hearing loss and what he can hear/will be able to hear. This image is about connecting with music, emotions and also with nature. I think both music and nature have come to the forefront in many peoples live over the last year. This is certainly the case for myself. And I am deeply appreciative for both.

Life is sweet

This image was taken while I was camping with family and friends in rural Victoria. Being outdoors, connecting with nature and spending time with my loved ones inspires me to be the best version of myself.

Snow

The snow inspires me to be my best self. This is a snowboard cover art I created during lockdown, it reflects places I’ve felt happiest during times of uncertainty.

This photo was taken in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia. When life gets overwhelming, sunsets inspire me to slow down and enjoy the simpler things.

What Makes You Happy?

| 0

Drawn on the paper bag that my food came in on arrival to university, ‘What Makes You Happy?’ is a disaster in crayon, pastel, biro, pencil and probably some mud from the Downs, where I drew most of it. From left to right, there is a self portrait indicating that one of the few ways I was getting serotonin last term was living vicariously through a Minecraft pumpkin farm. Next, there is a monk character that recurs in my art symbolising hope and calmness. They are much needed. A biblical angel is the next figure, he’s a pretty cool guy. Finally, we have a celestial worm thing inspired by a friend’s birthday cake. It made me smile, so I thought I’d whack it on there. The chicken is a reference to Slap The Chicken, a science podcast I started last November which I’ve been having a lot of fun with (this is a threat). To his right, there is my attempt at expressing the feeling of seeing a bat on campus. I like it when that happens. Some of my favourite Greek letters and a Python foot destroying the genuinely horrible part of my brain that I can’t fend off with glib jokes top off the image. I would say it’s related to Physics through Chaos, Python, Greek Symbols, Lasers, Flying, Compressing Forces, and Quantum Physics, in that parts of it make very little sense.

Valenstein

My dog, whose second name is Valentine, and Albert Einstein both inspire me because of their problem solving ability and intuitive understanding of people. Einstein noted that “Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth” My dog seems to agree with this…

Awakening

Reaching into the space of our mind where other dimensions exist and pull us like muses into another world.

Pottery painting

Painting of stars and planets on pottery. The mug hasn’t been put in the oven to seal the paint yet. Once it’s backed, the colours will turn darker.

Doorway to Laughter

Humour has many levels and so does life. Humour makes me feel like we can go beyond our little ways and invigorate life’s many ways of thinking. It never fails to inspire and help me lift up my focus. I saw this door in Nottingham and took its picture to remind me of the clown in us all.

Happy boy!

| 0

This little man is such an inspiration, he is learning to hopefully one day be able to walk again. He was born with a spinal defect that has gotten worse over time causing him to lose the use of his back legs. His pervasive family gave him up but that still hasn’t held him back. He has now been with my family for over a year and he couldn’t be a happier little boy. He goes on walks and struts around like he owns everywhere he goes. And at home he jumps around on my bottom when he is excited. He inspires me every day to get up and find the positive in the day no matter how small it is.
